Shot in the heart (Date: December 1, 1999)

Family man Skeet Ulrich is not your typical Hollywood young gun.

Skeet Ulrich has something most of today's young film stars don't: a life outside Hollywood. The 29-year-old actor, who has made his mark in such films as The Newton Boys and As Good As It Gets, rides horses, chops wood, and lives on a farm in Virginia with his British-born wife, actress Georgina Cates. Ulrich's voluntary removal from the New York-L.A. axis has not gone unnoticed, as he's the first to admit. "Sure it's affected me," he says in his unique slacker-Southern gentleman drawl. "Not being in producers' faces every day, not going to parties - I feel pressure to move back all the time. But when I met my wife, I think we both realized that there was no way we were going to raise a family in L.A."

Interestingly, Ulrich's latest project is all about intense allegiances (familial, political) and the choices they require; in Ang Lee's Civil War drama Ride With the Devil, he plays Jack Bull Chiles, a renegade Confederate soldier. The film features some fierce scenes on horseback, which Ulrich loved. "There would be days when we couldn't speak because we were so exhausted from the physical work," he recalls. "It was perfect." Next up for Ulrich: the comedy Anasazi Moon, costarring Gary Oldman. Anything else? "Just babies," he says, laughing. "We've got seven dogs already, so I think it's time."
